Battery Powder Conveying: Defining Metal-Contamination Acceptance Criteria
Battery powder conveying contamination acceptance should specify what is measured, where samples are taken, the analytical method, the acceptance limit and who releases the result. “Metal-free conveying” alone is not a usable acceptance criterion. Agree a material-specific protocol before selecting contact surfaces or comparing quotations.
This guide addresses the acceptance document for a powder-transfer package. For the wider process arrangement, see our battery powder pneumatic conveying overview. Keep the exact anode, cathode or precursor identity on the specification; they do not share one universal impurity limit.

Separate foreign particles from elemental composition
Ask the quality team whether the requirement concerns discrete foreign-metal particles, concentrations of specified elements, or both. An element that belongs to the powder formulation is not automatically an impurity. Define the unwanted substance relative to the exact material grade.
Elemental analysis by an agreed laboratory method and examination of discrete particles answer different questions. A total elemental result alone does not establish particle size or the number of foreign particles. Likewise, a visual inspection or magnetic collection result cannot establish every elemental impurity concentration. The laboratory should confirm preparation, reporting units, detection capability and method suitability for the actual matrix.
Map the contact path across the complete system
Review the complete pneumatic conveying system from the bag outlet to the downstream inlet. Include pickup fittings, feed devices, pipe bends, valves, receiver internals, filters where relevant, discharge equipment, seals and sampling tools. Mark whether each component is new, reused or supplied by another contractor.
| Contact point | Evidence to request | Acceptance question |
|---|---|---|
| Bag discharge and pickup | Contact-material and seal identification; cleaning access | Does the boundary include the bag interface and upstream retained material? |
| Feeders, bends and valves | Material/lining specification and accessible inspection points | How will wear, damage or exposed substrate be inspected? |
| Receiver and discharge | Internal contact surfaces, filter interface and cleaning procedure | Can retained material or maintenance debris enter the accepted stream? |
| Sampling equipment | Container, tool and handling procedure approved by the laboratory | Could sampling introduce the substance being measured? |
Stainless steel, a polymer component or a ceramic lining is a design choice to evaluate against the powder and duty. None alone proves an impurity specification has been met. Record inspection and replacement conditions instead of treating a material name as a purity certificate.
Agree the sampling and release responsibilities
The following is an original procurement worksheet, not a report of UPFLOW test results. Fill in the blank requirements with the buyer and qualified laboratory. Do not copy a numerical limit from another powder or customer.
| Decision | Agree before the trial | Responsible party to name |
|---|---|---|
| Starting condition | Grade, lot and upstream sample location; handling history | Buyer quality owner |
| Transfer boundary | Exact start/end points, route, throughput window and cleaning state | Buyer and conveying supplier |
| Paired sampling | Before/after locations, timing, number of samples and identification | Quality owner and laboratory |
| Measurement | Target contaminants, units, preparation, method and reporting capability | Laboratory and quality owner |
| Pass/fail | Absolute limit and/or permitted change; treatment of variability and retests | Buyer quality owner |
| Release and maintenance | Approver, records, inspection interval and requalification triggers | Buyer process and maintenance owners |
Where before/after values are compared, establish that the samples and method are comparable. A reported difference can include sampling and analytical variation; it is not automatically equipment-generated contamination. Define how unexpected results will be investigated before attributing a cause.
A relevant battery-material project boundary
UPFLOW’s European anode-material big bag unloading project describes enclosed FIBC discharge and connection with downstream powder handling. It is relevant to identifying the unloading-to-conveying handover. The published case does not provide a numerical metal-contamination acceptance result, so it should not be used as proof of one.
If your supply starts at bulk bags, include the bulk bag unloading interface in the same contact-point review. Our battery-material conveying design article provides additional design context; the agreed acceptance worksheet remains specific to your material and process.
Watch the system layout, then mark your sampling points
This UPFLOW animation illustrates a general positive-pressure conveying arrangement and receiving interfaces. It is a layout reference for marking a contact path, not a battery-powder purity test or evidence of a contamination limit.

Frequently asked questions
What metal impurity limit should a battery powder conveying system meet?
The buyer must define the limit for the specified material and downstream process with the responsible quality team. This article does not establish a universal battery-powder limit.
Does a magnet prove that the transferred powder meets acceptance?
Only if the agreed requirement and validated procedure support that conclusion for the specified contaminant. It cannot be assumed to measure every type of foreign metal or elemental impurity.
Should maintenance trigger another acceptance check?
Identify relevant triggers in the protocol: replaced contact parts, liner damage, a different powder grade or changed cleaning procedure. Agree the extent of requalification rather than repeating an undefined test.
Send a defined battery powder conveying requirement
Attach the grade information, route, contact-point sheet and draft acceptance protocol to the pneumatic conveying RFQ datasheet, then contact UPFLOW about the conveying package. Mark unconfirmed limits and laboratory responsibilities clearly.
