PA Pellet Pneumatic Conveying System: Feeding Dryers and Injection Molding Machines

A PA pellet pneumatic conveying system should be specified around the exact nylon grade, its moisture requirement and the point where material enters the dryer or molding machine. Delivering pellets to a hopper and preparing those pellets for processing are separate duties. Successful transfer is not a moisture acceptance test.

This guide covers polyamide pellets, including grade-specific PA6 and PA66 applications. It does not cover PA powder. Start with the resin supplier’s current processing data sheet; do not apply PET drying conditions or a single generic nylon setting to every PA grade.

Identify the PA grade before choosing the transfer arrangement

“Nylon” is not a complete material specification. Record the producer and grade, polymer family, reinforcement or filler, colour, virgin/regrind status and the form supplied. PA6, PA66, copolyamides and modified grades can require different processing conditions. A change in grade should trigger a review of the material record, rather than simply changing the label on a shared source bin.

Polyamide moisture conditions matter during processing. The resin producer’s instructions should determine whether drying is required and what moisture level is acceptable. Open or damaged packaging and time exposed before processing belong in the material history. The receiving system needs a defined way to protect material after any required drying.

Separate the two transfer boundaries

Source to dryer

Confirm how pellets leave the bag, bin or storage hopper and how the receiver feeds the dryer. The dryer supplier should confirm the inlet interface and the permitted refill pattern. Request a level or demand signal that coordinates replenishment with the actual usable hopper volume and process consumption.

A vacuum conveying unit can form part of an integrated vacuum feeding system, subject to material and route checks. Specify the vacuum source, transfer route, receiving equipment and controls together. Its presence does not establish a drying duty. The dryer specification and resin data sheet still determine the required treatment.

Our PET pellet transfer guide also separates source, dryer and processing-equipment interfaces. Use that equipment-boundary approach with the requirements for your PA grade; the PET material conditions are a separate specification.

Dryer to injection molding machine

Identify how the specified material condition is maintained between the dryer outlet and the machine inlet. Agree the conveying-air condition, receiver venting and sealing arrangement with the dryer and processing-equipment suppliers. Do not assume that ordinary ambient-air transfer preserves the agreed moisture condition.

Record the downstream hopper capacity, refill demand and stop/restart sequence. Check the route and any intermediate holding point, including what happens to pellets left in the line or receiver during a production interruption.

For the complete source-to-machine layout, review our pneumatic conveying system solutions. Match the line configuration to the actual source, dryer and receiving-machine interfaces.

Use a grade-and-interface input sheet

This original worksheet is for collecting confirmed inputs. It is not a nylon drying recipe or a claim that an installation has passed testing.

Check demand at the machine, not only the conveying rate

For nylon pellet conveying to dryers or injection molding machines, record both the consumption pattern and the available refill time. Several machines can call for material at once. A high transfer rate on one short demonstration route does not establish reliable replenishment across a shared installation.

Identify which receiver has priority, how an unavailable source is reported and whether the downstream machine must stop before it runs empty. Keep grade and destination identifiers consistent. Our plastic pellet changeover checklist addresses routing and retained-material checks when a shared path changes resin or colour.

Learn from a comparable vacuum-feeding process

In UPFLOW’s PVC powder feeding and vacuum conveying project, bag unloading and a vacuum conveying network supply multiple receiving points. Receiving-hopper interfaces, high-level detection and centralized control connect the transfer equipment to the existing process.

The relevant lesson for a nylon pellet conveying system is to define each receiver’s demand signal, available interface and refill sequence as part of the complete feeding network. The project handles PVC powder, so it does not establish PA pellet performance or a dryer-to-injection-molding installation. PA grade requirements, transfer conditions and moisture acceptance need separate confirmation.

Where a receiver connects to existing equipment, use our vacuum receiver and existing-hopper interface checklist to review connection geometry, support, venting and discharge responsibilities.

Watch the transfer principle, then define the PA-specific trial

The UPFLOW video below demonstrates vacuum pickup and granular-material transfer. The material is not verified as PA. It is a reference for the transfer action, not a nylon drying trial, a production-rate measurement or an endorsement of an open-floor pickup arrangement for your process.

For a PA pellet conveying trial, use the specified grade and document its starting condition, route, receiving arrangement and test duration. Measure delivered mass and record refill interruptions. Where fines or pellet damage are acceptance concerns, agree a sampling method and limit before the trial. Measure moisture at the agreed processing location separately; visible pellet movement cannot verify it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a nylon pellet conveying system replace a dryer?

Not by transport alone. Drying need and material acceptance follow the exact resin grade and processing conditions. Specify conveying and drying as separate duties even when they are integrated.

Can the same settings be used for PA6 and PA66?

Do not assume so. Confirm the grade-specific resin instructions, route and destination requirements. Filled, modified or recycled forms also need their own material record.

Can PA pellets and PA powder use the same specification?

No. Particle form changes the handling question. Identify powder separately and review its feeding, separation and material-assessment requirements rather than reusing a pellet specification.

Discuss your PA pellet feeding duty

Send the grade data sheet, source-to-destination sketch and dryer/machine interface details to UPFLOW for a PA pellet conveying review. Mark which material-condition inputs are confirmed and which still need agreement with the resin or dryer supplier.
